To be honest, I've struggled with a bit of depression--partly for a personal reason and partly because we lost our beloved parish priest to the inevitable diocesan shuffle. The change has been palpable. Our parish is no longer our home and we've pulled up roots there. Providentially, another parish we've become very involved in because it offers the Traditional Latin Mass on Fridays is now offering the TLM on Sundays. It's an hour long drive each way but it is very much worth it. I plan on devoting at least one blog post on the parish change but for now all I can say is "God is always good!"

As I've come out of my summer funk, I took several days and wrote an easy to follow elementary astronomy lesson plan for Leo, who will be in 3rd grade this year. I thought I'd share it here. You should be able to find all the necessary books at the library or on Amazon. All the labs listed come from Janice VanCleave's book Astronomy for Every Kid. Enjoy!
This week the Church traditionally celebrates the Whit Ember Days, or the Ember Days following Pentecost.

Our family has in the last year begun observing Ember Days. Here is an article I wrote for Catholic Sistas on the hows and whys: What Are Ember Days?Maurisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06489369133555827520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466128223711547349.post-72426803937974821852019-06-07T15:24:00.000-04:002019-06-07T15:24:18.597-04:00The Last FirstLeo has waited an entire year to finally receive the Body and Blood of Jesus for the first time. We waited because his godparents wanted to be a part of his special day. He also requested to receive at a Tridentine Mass for his first time and so we made arrangements to do that with our wonderful and accommodating parish priest, Father Erik.

This is our last First Holy Communion. It's definitely bitter-sweet to be in this position. It just brings home once again how quickly time does fly.
Our kids make a funny Mother's Day card for me each year. This was this year's offering. I love their sense of humor and I was dying of laughter until I got to the bottom middle frame. I cried for 30 minutes. I'm so thrilled to be a grandma! It really was the best Mother's Day gift I've ever recieved.

{The Conversion of Mary Magdalene by Paolo Veronese}

In one of the Facebook groups I take part in a young woman posted the following:

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: , , "blinkmacsystemfont" , ".sfnstext-regular" , sans-serif;">Hello! I was just perusing the forums and came across some incorrect information that I wanted to help correct. Mary Magdalene was NOT the Samaritan woman at the well. I believe it was around the 6th century that one of the Church Fathers (Gregory?) preached in a homily about connecting the two women together and since then this has muddled Mary M's reputation. Personally, since understanding these women were not the same, I have really grown in my love and appreciation for Mary M. whom Jesus held in high esteem. Hopefully this helps someone else if they are struggling with the character!
(It was made clear in the comments that the original poster did not mean the Samaritan woman at the well as indicated here, but the woman caught in adultery)

<span style="background-color: white; color: #1d2129; font-family: , , "blinkmacsystemfont" , ".sfnstext-regular" , sans-serif;">

I addressed her comment there, but I thought I would say more about it here. It is a long standing tradition of the Church that the women listed in the title of this post are one and the same woman. In fact, our local Cathedral dedicated to Mary Magdalene beautifully depicts her various appearances in scripture in several gorgeous art deco murals. It was indeed, Pope Saint Gregory the Great who famously preached on the connection and there have been several article published on the subject. This post by Father William Saunders and this one just recently published in The Catholic Thing by Rev. Jerry J. Pokorsky are very clear and interesting discussions of the tradition. The Wikimedia Commons webpage dedicated to art depicting Mary Magdalene shows that artists throughout the ages have made the same connection between Mary the sinner and Mary the dear friend of Jesus.

I completely disagree that the connection muddles Mary's reputation in the least. We are all sinners. The New Testament is filled with stories of converted sinners. The tradition of Mary Magdalene's conversion is actually of utmost importance. If a demon possessed, adulteress can be forgiven and converted it is a sign of great hope for the rest of us. Jesus' mercy is incomprehensibly deep and we need it to be so. Yes, Mary Magdalene was a great sinner and yet, once she converted and became one of His most devoted followers, He held her in high esteem. In the end, she went on to become one of the few followers of Jesus at the foot of the cross, the first witness to His resurrection, and a great saint. I find so much comfort in that knowledge. Don't you?

Music: My daughters recently introduced me to K-Pop (Korean pop music) and their favorite band: BTS. Some of their lyrics are in Korean and I expressed a bit of dismay over not knowing what the lyrics might be saying, but our 26 year old reassured me she had looked up the translations and had done some research on the K-Pop genre. The Korean music industry is very strict and holds their musicians to high standards of conduct and morality. The song lyrics reflect this and are clean and fairly innocuous. Videos: PBS has been airing a new production of Les Miserables that is quite good. It's a six part miniseries that is very well cast and acted and of course the costuming and set are authentically on point.
Several years ago he parted ways with the Cooks Illustrated family and started a new magazine and website called Milk Street. I get their bimonthly magazine and I really love the more international direction he has taken. The Tuesday Nights section is always filled with great, simple, and quick dinners that make weeknight cooking a complete breeze.

I've recently become aware of the issues many traditionalists have with the Divine Mercy Devotion. Divine Mercy Sunday is not even celebrated in the Traditional Latin Mass. I, myself, have had some lingering little doubts, especially in what I felt were oddities in Saint Faustina's writings. Thankfully, I came across this post by Father Dave Nix, who is a very traditionally minded priest. He heartily defends the devotion while also linking to traditionalists who disagree with it. It's well worth a read.

After this past Divine Mercy Sunday, I will doubt no longer. Our parish held a celebration for the entire deanery with confession, public recitation/chanting of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, a beautiful Mass celebrated by our bishop, and a lovely reception afterward. When we arrived at the church, 45 minutes early, the parking lot was packed. Upon entering the church we witnessed lines stretching out into the vestibule for confession. We had four priests available and they heard confessions beginning at 1 pm and continued to hear confessions until the end of the Mass at 4:30 pm. I was absolutely astounded by the desire folks had to avail themselves of confession on Divine Mercy Sunday. What a blessing! The faithful seeking out the sacrament of penance in this single celebration has re-strengthened my own belief in the Divine Mercy message and devotion. Jesus, I trust in You!Maurisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06489369133555827520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466128223711547349.post-26280113177340883022019-04-23T15:25:00.001-04:002019-04-23T15:25:38.129-04:00Our Holy Week and Easter In PhotosHoly Week is exhausting, and wonderful, and exhausting. We had something going on most everyday including double and Masses on Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday (attending and serving Masses in both the Ordinary and Extraordinary forms at two different parishes). I didn't take many photos because we were really "in the moment" quite often. These are just a few of the things we did throughout the week.

I spent the day stunned and heart broken watching images and video of the gorgeous Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris engulfed in flames. She appeared to be completely gutted and destroyed. What a miracle that so little damage was actually done. The altar survived, much of the interior survived, the twin bell towers survived, and the beautiful rose stained glass windows survived. Most importantly, the Blessed Sacrament was rescued as well as the relic of the crown of thorns, among other relics.

It shouldn't be lost on anyone that this unfortunate fire occurred at the very beginning of the most holy week of the year for Catholics. It seems to be symbolic of what is happening in the Church right now. The burning of Notre Dame should serve as a reminder for us that the Church is currently engulfed in the flames of scandal and confusion. This week of all weeks we should redouble our fasting and prayers for Holy Mother Church as she continues to burn. Let us pray the Church is rescued from the iniquity of those seeking to fatally damage Her and that She might be restored to Her proper glory in Christ.Maurisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06489369133555827520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466128223711547349.post-72893132229735113202019-04-15T16:14:00.000-04:002019-04-16T16:15:00.515-04:00Holy Week in Art: Monday of Holy Week

{Our current "half a dozen and more"}

Several months before I began writing this blog, our daughter, Nadja, created several movies with her siblings--mostly spoofs of stories they loved. She'd spend weeks shooting and editing her movies and so they decided they'd create their own little home movie production company. She named it Half a Dozen Productions, paying tribute to the fact there were six children in the family.

I really liked the name and asked if I could steal it. At the time, Ben was 2 years old and we'd had a miscarriage between him and Katerina as well as a loss after him. I was in my early 40s, so I thought naming the blog after our half dozen kids was a safe bet. Cue the laughter. At 42 I became pregnant with Leo.

It took awhile for me to come up with how to handle the blog's name, but in the end, I settled on Half a Dozen and More Productions and as our family grows it really makes more sense. God willing, we will constantly be adding more between marriages and grandchildren and I love that idea.Maurisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06489369133555827520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466128223711547349.post-79668935695170472282019-04-10T14:16:00.000-04:002019-04-10T14:16:17.955-04:00Across the Miles--CS Post

After attending our first Mass in our new parish in Maryland we introduced ourselves to our priest. We chatted for a few moments and he then asked if he could do anything to help us settle into our new community. I jumped at the offer and asked if he knew of any local homeschoolers we could hook up with. His eyes lit up, "I have the perfect person to introduce you to!" He walked us over to a lovely woman loading her half dozen children into a very large passenger van. He quickly introduced me to Sam, a life long resident of our new community who'd grown up in this particular parish.
We exchanged the usual pleasantries and Sam inquired, "So, are you planning on staying here permanently?" I explained we were a military family and did not know how long we'd be stationed in the DC area. She then promptly replied, "Oh, I can't be your friend then. I get too attached to people and my friends can never move away."
Honestly, I don't know how serious Sam really was because her words did not match her actions. Over the course of the 11 years we remained in that community our friendship slowly took root. In those years we attended the same parish, ran in the same homeschooling circle, celebrated birthdays, baptisms, First Holy Communions, and confirmations together. We established and enjoyed mutual friendships with several other moms in our parish and homeschooling group.
Sadly, the inevitable happened. My husband retired from the military and we decided to move back west. We had put down deep roots in Maryland, especially within our parish family. Pulling up those roots was one of the most difficult things I've ever had to do. Our friends threw us a lovely going away party and as a parting gift everyone in attendance recorded a special message on a DVD. It was several months after our move before I could bear to watch the outpouring of years of friendships in those messages.

Stretching the definition of friendship

Reestablishing myself in a parish and homeschooling group in Utah was tough. I'm an introvert at heart and making new friends does not come easily or naturally to me. God bless Sam, who kept in touch over text messages every so often. Over time Sam created a group text that grew to include four more of our mutual friends, who coincidentally had also moved away from that tight knit community in Maryland. This group has been an absolute treasure. These women are all such diverse, faithful, and supportive friends. At least weekly we hear from each other. We pray for each other, lift each other up and inspire each other. As Jenn, one of our members put so nicely--"This group has been a blessing to deepen faith, prayer, and home life and just knowing you are connected with others that love being Catholic and family as much as we do especially at times when the world deflates you."
This group of friends, spread across countless miles, has become my life line. It's been an enormous comfort knowing I have an army of prayer warriors at my fingertips who very often are walking out the door to attend Mass or adoration just as a texted prayer request has come through. We have prayed each other through job searches, moves, home sales, marriages of adult children, births, deaths, illnesses, surgeries, fractured relationships, tribulations and triumphs. We have seen miraculous answers in many of these prayer battles.
Each of these dear ladies has taught me important lessons in being available, trusting in prayer, and being vulnerable enough to share my needs. They have shown me the need for strong, holy friendships; and while we have been uprooted from a place, we remain rooted in Christ. Godly friendships are vital because they encourage spiritual growth and remind us we are not alone. More importantly they remind us that God does indeed answer our prayers. He heals the sick, comforts the afflicted, and stretches our capacity to love.

What the Bible and Saints have to say

Women today have a great need for holy friendships which inspire, support, and lift them up. The Bible has much to say about good, sanctifying friendships:

The heartfelt counsel of a friend is as sweet as perfume and incense.--Proverbs 27:9
Two people are better off than one, for they can help each other succeed. If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But someone who falls alone is in real trouble. Likewise, two people lying close together can keep each other warm. But how can one be warm alone? A person standing alone can be attacked and defeated, but two can stand back-to-back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.--Ecclesiastes 4:9-12
My intercessor is my friend as my eyes pour out tears to God; on behalf of man he pleads with God as one pleads for a friend.--Job 16:20-21
My command is this: Love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay one's life down for the life of one's friends. --John 15:12-13

Many saints have also expressed the benefits of virtuous friendship:

God sends us friends to be a firm support in the whirlpool of struggle. In the company of friends we will find strength to attain our sublime ideal. --Saint Maximilian Kolbe
Love everyone with a strenuous love based on charity, but form friendships only with those who can share virtuous things with you. -- St. Francis de Sales
The inner life of another that is known to God alone becomes to a much less degree open to us through friendship. It partially fills the desire of our incomplete, lonely hearts for completeness in another. Friendship brings out the best in a person through forgetfulness of self. --Saint Thomas Aquinas

God graced Sam with the ability to stretch her own definition of friendship to include those across the miles. Because of her trust we all have each other. God bless my good, holy, faithful friends; Sam, Jomary, Debbie, Jenn, and Katie. I love you all and I am eternally grateful for your love and support. What a grand reunion we have to look forward to someday. God's Will be done.Maurisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06489369133555827520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466128223711547349.post-41970479393334644932019-04-05T11:54:00.001-04:002019-04-05T11:54:25.498-04:00Of Note April 2019 for Catholic SistasThis is what I've been reading for my monthly series for Catholic Sistas.Maurisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06489369133555827520noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466128223711547349.post-89293459506139582512019-04-05T10:00:00.000-04:002019-04-05T11:52:00.494-04:00Friday Favorites April 5th
Books: I'm just about 1/3 of the way through The Brother's Karamazov. I've had this book on my reading list for years. It's extremely interesting so far and has me wondering if culturally Russians are as overtly emotional as they seem in this novel.

Podcasts: I listened to Caroline Farrow's interview with Patrick Coffin. She's a British journalist, wife, and mom who has been questioned by British authorities for comments she has made in social media regarding the LGBT trend of the day: transgenderism. This was an alarming and eye-opening interview. Free speech, free thought, and religious freedom are under attack in Great Britain, people. We need to wake up and stand firm to make sure it does not happen here in America.

Music: I've been enjoying You Say by Christian artist Lauren Daigle. The lyrics are powerful, but it's her voice that I adore. She really has such a beautiful quality to her voice that sounds very similar to Adele.
Videos: This short video by The Remnant features an audio recording of Bruce Springsteen reminiscing about his Catholic up-bringing. It packs a real punch, exposing the deep, depressing losses the Catholic Church has experienced with the implementation of Vatican II reforms.
Shops: With First Holy Communion and Confirmation season drawing near I discovered a unique gift idea from Clarey Clay Works who hand craft lovely personalized ceramic keepsake bowls for storing rosaries, change, jewelry, etc. They are a bit pricey, but so lovely.

Food: With my kitchen partially out of commission I've had to limit how elaborate our meals are. It's a good lesson in simplicity and detachment, to be honest. This week we enjoyed this lovely, simple coconut milk and thyme chicken.

Prayer: We've added the Pardon Prayer from Fatima to our morning offering. This prayer was taught to the three little shepherd children by the angel who first visited them:

We are in the 4th week of Lent and I am really trying to figure out what message God is trying to send me, because this has honestly been the toughest Lent I can remember. Here are the damages so far:

--Water leak and damage in our kitchen island and basement ceiling. The insurance company and contractors are negotiating what needs to be replaced and who will pay for it all. The kitchen island is the sticking point. The particle board base is destroyed. It definitely needs to be replaced in total but the contractors are unsure if the insurance company will completely agree with that assessment. Meanwhile we are held hostage with a single sink and no disposal or dishwasher indefinitely. The family is under strict orders to not request or make elaborate multi plate meals and we are eating off paper products.

--Several months ago my dearest friends asked for prayers for a family back in MD. The father had suffered from extensive, irreversible lung damage from childhood. He'd been on oxygen 24/7 for the last several years and even a cold could mean fatal damage to his lungs. In October his wife's doctors discovered she had Stage 4 Hodgkins Lymphoma, not long after the birth of their 4th child. Last week desperate prayer requests were received for the father who had ended up in the hospital and was put on life support. He was declining rapidly. After just a few days, with no improvement, his doctors, wife, and family were convinced he would never recover and it was definitively determined he was not a candidate for lung transplant. On Thursday his life support machinery was disconnected and he died shortly after as his loving wife sang the Divine Mercy Chaplet. My friends are heartbroken. From everything I've heard and read this is a lovely, faithful, joyful family who has born their sufferings faithfully and patiently for the greater glory of God. May David rest in eternal peace and may his wife and four children find consolation in Christ. In your kindness, please keep Karly in your prayers as she prepares for a stem-cell bone marrow transplant on Good Friday.

--Our devoted priest announced he is being moved to another parish in Salt Lake. This is completely new ground for us. We've never been in a parish in which our priest has been moved (other than the few military parishes we belonged to and expected frequent turn-over). Father Erik has been our priest for 7 years and we consider him a dear friend. I've actually never had a relationship with a priest like I've had with Father E. He's been a wonderful priest and confessor, but also a frustrating big brother who enjoys teasing and annoying me. Not only do we lose his leadership, but it means the loss of the Traditional Latin Mass we've come to love. It's a very difficult loss. Our new priest, Father Rodillas, is highly regarded by our daughters who attend his current parish. I have high hopes that while change is not easy, we will all settle back in and learn to love our new priest. I am praying and hoping he will agree to continue the TLM tradition in our parish. It would be an enormous shame to have it disappear after so much love and work has gone into having a TLM, training altar boys to serve, and training a schola in chant.

It does seem like a lot of struggling and disappointment for one Lent. I'm trying to stay positive and I'm really trying to place all my down-heartedness in His hands. These final days of Lent let us continue in prayerful confidence of His mercy and love for us. Pax Christi.Maurisahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/06489369133555827520noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6466128223711547349.post-427322364471886962019-04-02T19:07:00.000-04:002019-04-02T19:07:16.937-04:00WordAfter listening to an Abiding Together episode devoted to the three ladies' discussion of their words for the year, I began to think I really do need a mission to focus upon for the year. What better way then to have that focus be a particular word?

The year is already a quarter gone but it's better late than never in my thinking. I took it to adoration and meditated upon what God might be calling me to focus on for the remainder of the year. It came to me almost immediately--Wait.
I pulled out my notebook and pen and sketched the word and then meditated upon it's meaning. I love when words can have multiple meanings and "wait" definitely does.

The dual meaning in my case has to do first with waiting upon the Lord. Quietly, prayerfully, patiently waiting on Him to move. Waiting on Him and in His time for the answers to prayers and petitions I've made. Too often I am impatient and I want answers to be immediate and to my designs. Instead I am meant to offer up my designs and to wait upon Him to reveal His plan.

The secondary meaning of "wait" has to do with service--waiting upon others. This is already a huge part to my vocation as a wife and mother, so why is the word "wait" making itself so prominent in this regard? As I mediated I knew that even though most of my time is spent waiting upon others, too often it is done out of duty, without joy, and without love. A begrudgingly given service does not truly fulfill my vocation faithfully. I am being called to a deeper giving in my service to others.

So that is my word. Now I need to put it into action. May God grant me the grace to wait with patience, joy, and love.
